Peschici, a charming town in Gargano, is a place rich in history and natural beauty, ideal for a beach holiday. Founded in the 10th century by the Schiavoni with the name of Pesclizio, on the ruins of a farmhouse destroyed by the Saracens, Peschici has seen important developments over time, including the connection to the Gargano railway in 1931.
The historic center of Peschici is a labyrinth of characteristic alleys and white houses overlooking the sea. The "Porta del Ponte" and the imperial tower are among the historical points of interest, while the Church of S. Elia, dedicated to the patron saint, preserves precious Latin inscriptions and 17th-century frescoes of the Neapolitan school.
Another historical gem is the Church of Purgatory (S. Maria del Suffragio), with its large painting on the ceiling depicting "Purgatory, Paradise and Hell" and a wooden door symbolizing the churches of Purgatory. A few kilometers from the center, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Loreto, built on the site of a Marian apparition, houses a statue of the Virgin with Child.
The Castle of Peschici, damaged in 1239 during a siege and subsequently rebuilt, was restored in the 18th century by E. Pinto, Prince of Ischitella.
